STYLE: Cabernet Franc

Back to Styles List

Cabernet Franc is less intense and softer than Cabernet Sauvignon. This variety ripens relatively early and is very resistant to cold winters. Wines made with Cabernet Franc tend to be lighter in color and tanins with more fruit up front than Cabernet Sauvignon and leafy, herbaceous aromas. Typically used for Bordeaux style blends but used for varietal wines in the Eastern United States and Canada. Planted in most wine regions of the world but particularly in cooler inland regions.

Origin:
Cabernet Franc is a parent to Cabernet Sauvignon. Most likely originated in the Loire valley in France.
