Pitch Rate and Growth Calculator Instructions
 
Wyeast’s Pitch Rate and Growth Calculator is a tool for planning a propagation scheme to achieve proper cell counts in the fermenter. This calculator will calculate for 1 or 2 step propagations. For more information on propagations, visit the “Making a Starter” section of this site.
 
First, determine your desired pitch rate (x million cells per ml.) based the anticipated wort and fermentation conditions (for help, see the Pitch Rates section of this site). Next, fill in the fields on the calculator and press the “Calculate” button. The pitch rate (total cells/total volume) will be displayed on the calculator. Adjust the fields to achieve your desired pitch rate.
 
1 Step Propagation
 
Step 1
  1. Choose the size of package . (Activator or Propagator).
  2. Choose the number of packages.
  3. Indicate whether you are using a stir plate.
  4. Input the Starter volume. (Volume of starter wort)
 
Step 2
  1. Input the final fermentation volume. (Volume of Final Brew)
  2. Press calculate
  3. Your Final Pitch Rate will be displayed on the bottom line of Step 2.
 
 
2 Step Propagation
 
Step 1
1.   Choose the size of package . (Activator or Propagator).
  1. Choose the number of packages.
  2. Indicate whether you are using a stir plate.
  3. Input the Starter volume. (Volume of starter wort)
 
Step 2
1.        Input the next volume of wort added.
2.        Indicate whether you are using a stir plate.
 
Step 3
  1. Input the final fermentation volume. (Volume of Final Brew)
  2. Press calculate
  3. Your Final Pitch Rate will be displayed on the bottom line of Step 3.
 
Example:
 
Brewer X has 5 gallons of wort with an OG of 1.085. He has determined that he wants to inoculate his wort with 18 million cells per ml. He only has 1 Activator of Wyeast's Trappist High Gravity # 3787.  He decides to perform the following two step propagation:
1 Activator into 0.5 gallons wort (1.040 @ 70F)
Allow to ferment 24-36 hours
Add 0.5 gallons of wort (1.040 @ 70F)
Allow to ferment 24-36 hours
Add 5 gallons of wort 1.085
