STYLE: Barbera

Back to Styles List

Barbera produces wines of deep color and low tannins with pronounced acidity even when grown in very hot climates. Barbera produces a wide range of wines in Italy, from young relatively light wines to intense wines requiring extended cellaring. When grown properly for low yields, Barbera can provide high quality fruit that produces big wines that benefit from aging in new oak.

This variety probably originated in the Piedmont region of Italy and is the second most planted red grape variety in Italy. Barbera was brought to North and South America by immigrants and is planted heavily in Argentina and also in California.

Age in new oak to add spiciness and soften acidity.
