Pitch Rate and Growth Calculator Directions:

Wyeast's Pitch Rate and Growth Calculator is a tool for planning a propagation scheme to achieve proper cell counts in the fermenter.  This calculator will calculate for 1 or 2 step propagations. For more information on propagations, visit the "Propagation" section on this site.

First determine your desired pitch rate (x million cells per ml.) based on the anticipated wort and fermentation conditions (for help see the Pitch Rate section of this site). Next fill in the fields on the calculator and press the "Calculate" button.  The pitch rate (total cells/total volume) will be displayed on the calculator. Adjust the fields to achieve your desired pitch rate.

1 Step Propagation:

Step 1.

1.  Choose the cell count of your slurry*. 2. Choose the volume of slurry. 3. Input the volume of wort used.

Step 2

1. Input the final volume of wort added. 2. Press calculate. 3. Your Final Pitch Rate will be displayed on the bottom line of Step 2.

2 Step Propagation:

Step 1.

1. Choose the cell count of your slurry*. 2. Choose the volume of slurry. 3. Input the volume of wort used.

Step 2.

1. Input the next volume of wort added.

Step 3.

1. Input the final volume of wort added. 2. Press calculate. 3. Your Final Pitch Rate will be displayed on the bottom line of Step 3.

Example: Brewer x has 20 Bb of ale wort with an OG of 1.056 and wants to use 1272 American Ale 11.  He has determined that he wants to inoculate his wort with 6 million cells per ml.  He chooses 3 Liters of yeast for a 1 step propagation based on the following scheme: (1.) 3 liters into 2 Bbl wort (1.040@70F)  (2) Allow to ferment 48 hours (3) Add 18 Bbl of wort (1.040@70F).

*Wyeast liquid yeast slurry is packaged with a cell count of 1.2 x 109 cells per ml.
